YOUTH PLEDGE. The Youth Pledge is a major milestone in the history of the Indonesian independence movement. This pledge is considered as a crystallization of the spirit to affirm the ideals of the founding of the Indonesian state. What is meant by "Youth Pledge" is the decision of the Second Youth Congress which was held for two days, 27-28 October 1928 in Batavia (now called Jakarta). This decision affirmed the ideals of an "Indonesian homeland", "the Indonesian nation", and "the Indonesian language". It is also hoped that this decision will become the basis for every "Indonesian national association" and that it should be "broadcast in various newspapers and read before meetings of associations". The term "Youth Pledge" itself did not appear in the decision of the congress, but was given after it.
